Meet Freyja, Our talented writer

Kids Parliament is proud to introduce Freyja to our viewers. She will be writing articles about her own experience as a special need person, with all its gifts and challenges on Kids Parliament website and facebook.
Freyja was born in Reykjavík, Iceland the year 1986. When she was born she was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta, which makes her bones very fragile, low height and the necessity for using a wheelchair to get around. Many would say this was a pity but she says it is a privilege to have the opportunity to take a different journey and live as a disabled person, with all it’s gifts and challenges.
She graduated from the University of Iceland with a bachelor degree in social pedagogy in June 2010. Her final thesis was on viewing the service offered to young disabled children (0-3 years old) and their families. The purpose of the research was to gain knowledge about disabled children’s parents experience of the service system, attitudes of professionals and their methods of work and what messages were sent to the parents concerning the children’s upbringing and future. The purpose was also to look into whether the service offered reflected the human rights of children and the independent living philosophy. The School of Education at the University of Iceland rewarded the final thesis for reflecting a different understanding of disability and rationalizing it by adducing it to the UN Convention of the Child and the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities which was considered innovative in Icelandic theoretical work concerning disabled children.
The last three years she has taking part in the disabled people’s movement in the struggle for independent living and personal assistance. Finally A user-controlled cooperative for personal assistance was founded by disabled people on the 16th of June 2010. She started off being the boards vice chairman but on the 1st of December 2010 she took over as the managing director of the cooperative.
